Methionine Restriction

What is methionine? One of the essential amino acids. Why are they called essential? Because our body can't produce them internally; we need to consume them through diet. But is there a problem with excess methionine intake? Yes, that promotes cancer — see videos below by Dr Peter Rogers and Dr Greger!

Which foods have methionine in excess? Meat, fish, eggs and dairy! Plant foods have lower amounts of methionine but adequate for our daily needs. An overview article by Dr Greger: A Low-Methionine Diet May Help Starve Cancer Cells (2014):

So what to eat? A plant-based diet is best. In other words, by eating 100% plant foods, we minimize methionine intake (but we consume enough methionine to meet our daily dietary requirements), thereby slowing down cancer growth. For more details, please watch all the videos in this post.

I found this video fascinating! It also has interesting tidbits of information that dogs can be trained to detect cancer from odor!

(2013) Methionine Restriction as a Life-Extension Strategy

(5 mins) Transcript. Dr Greger's summary: "Plant-based diets may prove to be a useful nutrition strategy in both cancer growth control as well as lifespan extension, because these diets are naturally lower in methionine."

Dr Peter Rogers

Summary of first video below: What is methionine? One of the essential amino acids that we need to consume through diet. Is there a problem with excess methionine intake? Yes, that promotes cancer! Which foods have methionine in excessive amounts? Meat, fish, eggs and dairy! Methionine is also found in relatively high amounts in nuts & seeds. Other plant foods have lower amounts of methionine but adequate for our daily needs. So what to eat? A Low Fat plant-based diet is best. In other words, by eating 100% plant foods with very small amounts of nuts & seeds, we minimize methionine intake, thereby slowing down cancer growth.
