Dr Michael Klaper (b 1947) is a long-time advocate of Whole Food Plant-Based guidelines. His cookbook from 1987 is titled The Cookbook for People Who Love Animals (1987). In the short video below, he shares his personal life story, and how he was influenced by non-violence principles advocated by Mahatma Gandhi and other Indian saints.
(2 mins, 2019) Awakening to a Plant-Based Non-Violent Lifestyle
Transcript of Dr Klaper's 2-min video:

My name is Dr Michael Klaper. How I came to favor a plant-based non-violent lifestyle was the convergence of a number of forks that happened in my early 30s.

I had done my medical training in Chicago at Big Battle Cook County Hospital where I exposed to massive amounts of trauma — shootings and stabbings and shotgun blasts. And I knew I wanted to eliminate the violence in my life as much as I possibly could.

And I had been reading the works of spiritual writers on non-violence — Mahatma Gandhi and various Indian saints. And while pontificating one night to my friend about wanting to remove theviolence in my life over a steak dinner, he astutely pointed out that "if you want to eliminate the violence in your life, you might start with that piece of meat on your plate. Because your desire for flesh in your mouth is paying for the death of that animal." And as soon as he said that, a little voice on my shoulder said, "you know, he's right!"

And it didn't take long before animal flesh and dairy products exited my diet when I found out the truth of dairy. And it wasn't longer after that that I looked at my leather shoes and leather belt and saw that was no longer acceptable, so i dug a hole in the backyard and buried them, had a funeral for them. And i have been a committed vegan ever since.

At the same time, I was on the anesthesia service at a teaching hospital, putting people to sleep every day and watching surgeons open up their arteries and pull out this yellow greasy gunk out of their arteries, which is basically the fat of the animals these people are eating. And my dad died of clogged arteries; I knew I was gonna end up on that operating table with that ?? going on my chest. I said, "I'm going to create a different fate for myself."

And all these forces were converging. It became very evident that a plant-based diet was not only the way that I was going to practice medicine; it was going to be the way that I lived my life. And I'm very happy, glad that I passed through that transformative chapter. And everything in my life has been different and better ever since.

Dr Klaper's FaceBook Post in 2020

Soon after covid-19 started, Dr Klaper posted this on FaceBook:

Text of Dr Klaper's FaceBook post:

The truth portrayed in this cartoon holds the key to understanding the current coronavirus pandemic - and to prevent the next, more fearsome viral plague that is surely incubating among the billions of chickens, pigs and cattle crowded into the worlds factory farm system.

This pandemic - and all the contagious scourges portrayed in the drawing - are urgent messages from the animals saying, "Enough! We are not your food! If you keep confining us to raise, slaughter and eat, you will face repeated viral pandemics, each more destructive than the next."

"Homo sapiens, you are not carnivorous apes. Go back to the whole, plant-based foods your body was designed to run on and all will be well - for you and for us and for the Earth on which we all depend."

Dr Klaper's Talk on Covid-19 (2020)

At offset 10:13 of this video (16 March 2020), Dr Klaper narrates the possible chain of events from Wuhan, China to the current situation in a dramatic way. It feels like a surreal movie scene! Below is the transcript — it may be better to hear it in Dr Klaper's own words.

"I have to say something about the origin of this scourge that we are facing. Now this is not a random event. This came form a common theme that you've heard me and others talk about. It has to do with the confinement and slaughter and eating of animals! We are plant-eating creatures and we repeatedly seem to violate that natural reality with all the cows, the pigs and chickens we eat."

"In Asia, they have a long history -- I'm not blaming folks in Asia -- I'm just narrating the chronology here. They have a long history of eating anything that moves. And they may come from centuries of starvation and I'm not condemning that. But what it has devolved into now are these dreadful wet markets in Asian countries and these poor wild creatures -- the bats, the scaly anteaters, the pangolins, the ducks and salamanders and the snakes and the fish are all kept in cages (fish are kept in tanks, of course), stacked on each other. And the bats on top defecate on the pangolins down below and the pangolins get the virus that mutates in their body -- they become the intermediate host. And people eat these pangolins -- these beautiful, scaly anteater creatures!

"But people eat bats themselves! And apparently, in China and in Asian countries, people go into the caves and they pull these cave bats off the walls! Well, bats naturally are teeming with viruses! There are so much guano (excrement) and close contact in those caves; they are great incubators for viruses. So each of these bats they yank off the walls or snare in the air are full of viruses!"

"And.. so what must have happened?"

"Because people like to put parts of bats, their heads and muscles and wings into soups and stews -- it's an ancient tradition there -- well, you can say with some precision, going backwards in this epidemic, 6 months ago (or) 8 months ago, in the wet market in Wuhan, China, some man or woman took a bat out of a cage while it was still alive or a dead one, put it onto a chopping block. And a man or woman took a nice sharp cleaver and butchered the bat to sell it to somebody who wanted to put it in their stew. And when that cleaver came down and split that bat in half, ... well, it ruptured open its bladder and its intestines.. and bat urine full of viruses and bat feces full of viruses, sprayed all over that person.. on their face.. whatever.. they wiped it away.. they inhaled the viruses who got into their system and into their lungs.. and they developed that cough and they started coughing it out.. and that was patient zero! And we are now all dealing with the repercussions of that.. and you know.. we can trace that all the way back to that one fateful cleaver blow.. that changed the course of human history!"

".. and this is a message from the animals.. another message.. the same ones that we are getting from the.. -- because in the West, we do the same thing -- remember the SARS virus, it was a pig virus that comes out of these confinement operations where they put thousands of hogs or cattle -- these are all virus factories, virus incubators when you confine animals like this. And we can't be shocked when these exotic viruses and infections erupt from unnatural and inhumane installations that keep these animals together."

"And so the bats are telling us, the pangolins are telling us, the pigs are telling us, the cows are telling us, "Stop eating us! We are not your food! If you confine us and eat us, you are violating the natural law and it's gonna come back on you and naturally, that's what this coronavirus is really all about."

"And so all we have to do is go to our natural diet. The bats are telling us, "We are not your food, you eat rice and beans and greens and fruits and vegetables, you'll be fine and healthy, we'll be fine and healthy, we'll be fine and healthy.""

"Don't go into bat caves and take the bats for food. They are not our food."

"Let's eat a healthy whole food plant-based diet. And this will all go away. This will be be the last animal based viral epidemic that we'll have to face. That's the real message here and it's not being mentioned in the media here. But we need to talk the reality about the message behind this epidemic. And it's another Western Union telegram from the animals, saying "Let's live in peace. You homo sapiens, you go back to your plant-based diet and you don't have to go through stressful times.""

Dr Klaper's echoes Dr Greger's narration in his eye opening 58-min lecture on pandemics from 2013.
