Gooseberries / 'Amla'

Disclaimer
Gooseberries are tart! We get frozen gooseberries in Indian stores nearby. I use them occasionally for preparing beans & lentils. Dr Greger adds gooseberry powder to his morning smoothie. Why? It's one of the foods with very high antioxidant content; the cholesterol lowering effects of amla are pretty amazing. Where to buy amla? See Berries: Where to Buy in USA?

Flavor: Wikipedia page on amla explains: "According to Ayurveda, amla fruit is sour (amla) and astringent (kashaya) in taste (rasa), with sweet (madhura), bitter (tikta) and pungent (katu) secondary tastes (anurasas)."

Health Benefits

Gooseberries (article by Dr Greger) explains that 'amla' — the indigenous name for goosberries — is a key medicinal plant in Ayurveda; also used in traditional Chinese and Thai medicine.
