Atherosclerosis & Lower Back Pain

Could clogged arteries contribute to lower back pain? I was surprised to know that it's possible! At offset 34:07 of this Q&A video, Dr Greger explains:

The studies that we have on nerve pain are only on diabetic neural pain … we have some miraculous results with WFPB diet and diabetic nerve pain … we have studies on other nerve disorders like Multiple Sclerosis but not pain like trigeminal pain.

Sciatic pain may have to do with disc degeneration. There is good data showing that atherosclerosis in the vertebral arteries that feed your vertebral discs play a role in disc degeneration. Our discs — our vertebral discs — cushioning between our inner spine is the largest avascular tissue in the body, meaning that there is no blood vessels inside them, so all the nutrients have to kinda trickle in — diffuse in from the outside; all the waste products have to diffuse out — you need a really rich blood flow to support your disc.

And if you have clogs in your vertebral arteries and do MRIs, you'll see clogs in all your arteries. You have clogs in your heart, you can get heart attack. You have clogs in your brain, you can get a stroke. Clogs in your vertebral arteries, you can degenerate your discs and get low back pain, sciatic pain, etc. etc.

Now, for the clogs in your heart, you can go plant-based and you can actually reverse: open up the arteries without drugs, withuout surgery and have a reversal. The question is: can we reverse low back pain — one of the leading cause of disability — by increasing blood flow, or are the discs too far gone and they're just not gonna come back? [Such studies have] never been done. Never been tried. Would love to see a trial on reversal of low back pain — randomizing people into plant-based diet — hasn't been done, certainly worth a try.

A couple of videos by Dr Greger explaining the connection further:
(2012) Cholesterol and Lower Back Pain

(1 min) Transcript. This video explains that lower back pain may be caused by clogged arteries in the lower back area. This video has pictures of clogged arteries in lower back and spine which contributes to lower back pain.

(2014) Back in Circulation

(5 mins) Transcript. In this video, Dr Greger presents evidence that atherosclerosis (blockages in arteries) in lower back may result in back pain.

Dr Peter Rogers

Dr Peter Rogers has written a book Ischemic spine is most common cause of back pain: How to diagnose and treat (129 pages, 2018). Book outline at Amazon:

Lack of blood flow (ischemia) is the most common cause of back pain. The disc is poorly perfused even under optimal conditions. Everybody knows that the brain and the heart need blood supply, but so does the spine. Too often the search is only for the "pain generator," and the "underlying cause" has been forgotten. We are looking at the TREE with a microscope, but we've forgotten to look at the FOREST. If all the trees have Dutch Elm disease, will it help to remove the most affected tree. This book is like an "antibiotic" to improve all the trees in the forest; to improve blood supply to the entire spine. Better blood supply helps prevent progression of degenerative disc disease and the cascade of compensations that follow it like foraminal stenosis, central stenosis, bridging osteophytes, DISH, OPLL, OLF, Schmorl's nodes, radiculopathy, myelopathy, disc space calcification and autofusion. Atherosclerosis, lumbar artery stenosis, gallstones, fibroids in the uterus, diverticulosis and fatty liver all go together. Vegan diet is the easy way to lower blood viscosity and to prevent and reverse atherosclerosis. The author is an interventional radiologist and neuroradiologist who used to run a spinal injection clinic and who has seen tens of thousands of spinal CT scans and MRI's and who has observed patterns of disease and outcomes for decades. Best outcomes come from deep understanding of disease and of treatment options. Motivated, educated patients and doctors are able to get the best results.

Dr Rogers has a YouTube channel where he posts short, funny but super informative videos: Peter Rogers MD (YouTube). In addition to the videos below, see Lectures on Blood Flow by Dr Peter Rogers for more insights.
