Whole Food Plant-Based (WFPB) has emerged from nutrition science in the West. It doesn't resemble any contemporary food system that's popular. So these challenges emerge:

  1. WFPB differs from my cultural background: "I am from region X, tradition Y, community Z in the world; this food system is so different from what we follow!" Yes, it is! And for good reasons :) These reasons must really be appreciated. And when we come in touch with our fellow brothers and sisters from region X, tradition Y or community Z, we'll have to explain why we eat differently! This is a delicate and difficult task. We have to embrace it.
  2. WFPB differs from my parents' food choices: Following a food system different from our parents, our grandparents and our extended family is very difficult. We need a strong sense of independence and conviction to adopt a fundamentally new food system. And we need acceptance and support from our extended family.
  3. WFPB differs from my spouses' food choices: Two food systems in any household, with or without kids, is generally challenging. It's best if a household follows a common food system, together, as a family.
  4. How may I socialize with my friends? Tough one!
Overlap With Other Food Systems

Does WFPB resemble any traditional food system practiced anywhere in the world? Yes. WFPB guidelines overlap with the Blue Zones Diet and Nature Cure guidelines. However, the number of people who follow these two diets are so few!

WFPB guidelines overlap with Veganism to the extent that it often gets confused with Veganism. However, the two are different. Turns out that the vast majority of Vegans are 'ethical vegans' who incorporate one half of Whole Food Plant-Based diligently into their personal lives: the "Plant-Based" portion. Most ethical vegans ignore the "Whole Food" part; their food plates often have processed foods, stimulants (alcohol, coffee) and extracts (sugar, oil).

The surging popularity of Veganism in the world has made life simpler for those who follow Whole Food Plant-Based guidelines. At least plant-based options are now available in many restaurants. Culturally, many of our friends and family members understand the idea of 'No Animal Products'.
