Berries For Breakfast

Berries are an essential component of My Daily Breakfast: Sweet Porridge.

"Berries are the best fruits!" — Dr Greger. Berries are a food group by itself in Dr Greger's Daily Dozen. What makes berries so special? They are rich in antioxidants and protect us from myriad modern chronic lifestyle conditions including cancer. For details, see Berries.

List of berries: blueberries, strawberries, cherries, gooseberries ('amla'), goji berries, cranberries, barberries, blackcurrants, mulberries, golden berries, sumac, raspberries, acai berries, aronia berries.

How to get started? For my friends in California, I suggest starting with two berries: frozen blueberries found in stores like Costco, and amla powder (gooseberry powder) from Amazon. And then expand to myriad other berries: Berries: Where to Buy?

Why berries? Ever since I learnt that one of the 12 components in Dr Greger's Daily Dozen is berries, I started making sure that I eat some berries every day. In 2019, I watched several videos by Dr Greger on berries and made some notes here: Berries. Even Dr Joel Fuhrman thinks highly of berries. The second B in Dr Joel Fuhrman's acronym GBOMBS stands for berries.

Fresh Berries: Fresh berries like blueberries, raspberries, blackberries or mixed berries are generally expensive. I do buy them sometimes.

Frozen Berries: Luckily, large-sized packets of frozen organic berries are available at Costco where I live. When bought in bulk from a store like Costco, berres become reasonably priced.

Some people wonder, 'are frozen berries inferior in terms of nutrition compared with fresh berries?' No, they are just fine; see Fruits & Veggies: Fresh vs Frozen.

Dried Berries: In 2019, I started buying a variety of dried berries online; I soak them for a few minutes in water before consumption. See Berries for details.
