White or red or black quinoa? In the video below, Dr Greger mentions that red quinoa has approximately twice the antioxidant content. Red and black are comparable.
(4 mins) Transcript. Dr Greger's summary: "How do the nutrition and health effects of quinoa compare to whole grains?"
At offset 1:24 of Dr Greger's video: Benefits of Quinoa for Lowering Triglycerides (4 mins, 2020), he shares a table:
In the table above, iron content for whole grains: whole wheat (4.6), barley (4.6), oats (6.2), rye (4.4), triticale (6.5), rice (2.8), quinoa (16.8), kaniwa (15.0), kiwicha / amaranth (7.5). Does quinoa really have so much iron (16.8) as compared with whole wheat (4.6), a factor of almost 3.7?
Nutritional labels of quinoa sold on Amazon don't have such high amounts of iron relative to wheat. So what type of quinoa were these researchers studying? Is there some quinoa sold in USA that's super iron rich?
Quinta Quinoa: I chanced upon Quinta Quinoa being grown in Canada. It is explicitly marketed as a grain high in fiber, high in Fe (iron), Mg (magnesium) and Zn (zinc). A mere ¼ cup of Quinta Quinoa (with 180 calories) has a whopping 60% iron DV (!), 50% magnesium DV and 25% zinc DV.
Where to buy Quinta Quinoa? See Retail locations and Amazon.
Other brands of quinoa: Which of the commonly found brands of quinoa are iron rich? Most of them have between 8% DV to 15% DV in ¼ cup but the brands below have more:
If you find a brand of quinoa (white | red | black | any variety) with more iron per calorie, please share. Thank you!
