(2 mins, 2020) Conquering PCOS with a Plant-Based Diet | Alison's Story
(19 mins, 2020)

This video features Alison Tierney, a WFPB nutritionist specializing in oncology (cancer). When she was in school, her mom had breast cancer and her grandpa had liver cancer. And while she was pursuing business as her undergrad major, her real interest lay in nutrition. After graduating, she switched to nutrition, specializing in oncology.

During her early days of practice, she wasn't WFPB. But she started reading up on literature by herself and gradually came in touch with writings of Dr Fuhrman, Dr Campbell, Dr Greger, … and she started tweaking her own food habits.

Later, when she ran into acne and PCOS and infertility, she decided to become strict with zero meat, zero dairy. And she experienced positive results. Today, she is 100% WFPBand advocates that lifestyle.

Success Story: Rohini Bajekal

Rohini Bajekal is a WFPB nutritionist in UK. In Sep 2021, she shared her personal struggles with PCOS in Instagram messages: My PCOS Story — From Self-Loathing to Self-Acceptance. She wrote:

September is PCOS Awareness Month. Despite PCOS being the most common endocrine condition to affect women and anyone assigned female at birth, most have never heard of it.

I recently talked about my PCOS journey on an IG Live with my mother @drnitubajekal. It has taken me a long time to share my personal story of living with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and has taken years of processing things myself to be able to do so.

At the age of 20, while studying for finals at university, I developed painful cystic acne, scalp hair loss and mood changes. My mother, a gynaecologist, suggested I may have PCOS but I wasn't ready to hear it and put it down to the stress of exams. Over the next few years, my skin flared up whenever my stressful lifestyle caught up with me. I was on the Pill for heavy periods and each time I tried to come off it, the worsening acne and excess hair growth proved too much to cope with. I constantly sacrificed sleep due to fear of missing out. As a way of coping with anxiety and fatigue, I leant heavily on caffeine, alcohol and sugar often experienced self-loathing, cancelling social engagements when it all got too much. This cycle continued for years.

A turning point in my life came when I moved to Mumbai, India in 2014 for a couple of years. I slept properly, ate nutritious plant-based food, moved my body regularly and found healthier coping mechanisms. I also fell in love and found myself gradually opening up about my anxieties to my partner. For the first time in years, I felt truly energised.

Since getting an official diagnosis (confirmed by scan + blood tests) I have managed my PCOS by focusing on all aspects of my health. A fibre-rich plant-based diet has been the cornerstone but sleep, daily movement, stress management, avoiding alcohol and spending time with people I love has enabled me to thrive. My blood tests are now in the normal range and my periods are regular. Without PCOS, I know I would not be living the life I am today.

I can't wait to share more with you in our book "Living PCOS Free" which is available for pre-order now (link in my bio).

Satvic Movement: Success Stories

Satvic Movement was started by Subah Jain (Subah Saraf). Her own personal story is recounted here: (2018) Living Light Graduate Shining Her Light - Subah Jain. She explains:

What drew you to plant-based/raw food cuisine?

I was drawn to plant-based cuisine because I cured my health problems with it. I grew up on the standard Indian diet, consisting of milk, ghee, wheat, sugar, and very few fruits and greens. I didn’t realize the damage I was doing to my body until I fell sick. By the time I was 17 years old, I was already suffering from PCOS, hypothyroidism, excessive hair loss, and weighed about 15 pounds more than I should have. I was taking 6 different tablets a day. The fact that I had all these diseases at such a young age was extremely scary. I tried everything under the sun, but nothing worked because I was still eating exactly the same food that was feeding my disease.

My life took a turn when I met a Guru in India, who taught me how to reverse these diseases without medicines, by drastically changing my diet & lifestyle. He recommended that I eliminate all dairy, oils, sugars and processed foods from my diet and eat food straight from Nature, the way it is found naturally, which is mainly raw, alkaline, vegan, water-rich food.

At first, I couldn’t believe that changing my food could cure me. Nonetheless, I decided to give it a try, since nothing else was really working anyways. I trashed every single pill I was taking and started following his diet. When I got my blood checked after exactly 3 months, I was no longer suffering from the diseases that I had been taking pills for. I lost about 18 pounds, my skin became clear for the first time in many years, and my menstrual cycles regulated.

It was clear to me that Mother Nature is not just a powerful healer, but actually the only healer. I wanted to tell everybody that they too can cure their health problems by switching to raw, plant-based, alkaline food. I wanted to scream it out to the world, so I decided to make it my life.
