Prof Jane Plant: Breast Cancer

Prof Jane Plant (1945-2016) was a Professor of Geochemistry at Imperial College, London. She had a distinguished career and won several prestigious awards. She was Chief Scientist of British Geological Survey, for example, and was awarded the prestigious Lord Lloyd of Kilgerran Prize.

Prof Jane Plant was diagnosed with breast cancer several times in her life. Each time, she says that she was able to bring it into remission by adopting Whole Food Plant-Based (WFPB) guidelines. In her writings, she lays special emphasis on the 'no dairy' guideline.

Jane Plant was intrigued that China had almost no incidence of breast cancer. She and her husband narrowed down the cause to diet. Curiously, China has been dairy-free for thousands of years. Jane Plant then discovered scientific studies which established a link between dairy consumption and incidence of cancer. Her observations predate the The China Study (441 pages, 2006) by over 5 years — her earliest books on the subject are from 2001-2002 timeframe.

(1) The No-Dairy Breast Cancer Prevention Program (292 pages, 2002).

Professor Jane Plant, one of Britain's most eminent scientists, contracted breast cancer in 1987. She had five recurrences, and, by 1993, the cancer had spread to her lymph system. When orthodox medicine gave up and she was told that she only had three months to live, she determined to use her extensive scientific training and her knowledge of other cultures to find a way to survive. In her research, she was startled to find that in China breast cancer affects far fewer women than in Western countries. Plant considered that there could be a dietary trigger for the illness. As she continued her scientific investigations, she became convinced that there was a causal link between consumption of dairy products and breast cancer.

(2) Your Life In Your Hands (272 pages, 2002).

"Professor Plant courageously tells a compelling and very personal story on breast cancer that is a must-read, not only for women interested in this disease but also for the scientific and medical communities, who should sit up and take notice. It is time that the long-alleged nutritional worthiness of dairy be brought up for discussion." — Dr T Colin Campbell (who coined the term 'Whole Food Plant-Based in 1982).

"This book should be read by every woman wishing to avoid breast cancer and to live life to her fullest potential. The book is well documented and easy to read. Your doctor should be recommending it to you." — Dr John McDougall
