Can we hope to reverse diabetic neuropathy and retinopathy? Yes! See Eric Adam's Success Story and videos by WFPB docs below.
Dr Michael Klaper

In an insightful video below, Dr Klaper explains that the #1 reason for developing peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage causing weakness, numbness and pain in hands and feet) is too much sitting. The 2nd most common reason is diabetes.

Is there hope for those with diabetic neuropathy? Yes!

At offset 11:34, Dr Klaper summarizes a study by Dr Crane (Weimar Institute, California) from 1994 in which 21 patients with painful diabetic neuropathy ("hot burning pain going down their legs") were put on a low fat WFPB diet (no oils; low total fat intake) plus 30-min walk plus Vitamin B-12. Within 2 weeks, 17 out of 21 patients became pain-free! The other 4 had partial improvement.

The study mentioned at offset 11:34 in this video is also described in Dr Greger's video below.

(2016) Curing Painful Diabetic Neuropathy

(5 mins) Transcript. Dr Greger's summary: "Diabetics suffering from nerve pain for years are cured within days with a plant-based diet." Excerpts:

Now, this was a live-in program, where patients’ meals were provided. What happened after they were sent home? The 17 folks were followed for years, and in all except one, the relief from the painful neuropathy continued or improved even further. How’d they get that kind of compliance? Pain and ill health are strong motivating factors. One of the most painful and frustrating conditions to treat in all of medicine and 75% cured within days with a natural, nontoxic—in fact, beneficial—treatment, a diet composed of whole plant foods.

(2014) Multiple Studies Showing REVERSAL of Type II Diabetes Through Diet

This talk is actually a 7-minute snippet from a longer 54-minute talk: From Table to Able: Combating Disabling Diseases with Food (Aug 2014).

This video focuses on diabetic neuropathy (damage to nerves), which may lead to serious amounts of pain and suffering. About 50% of diabetics develop diabetic neuropathy. Reversal of diabetic neuropathy — something considered impossible — was reported in landmark studies going back to 1950s and 1970s. In fact, reversal was dramatic — in 80% of patients, within a matter of days! What was the intervention? Adoption of a whole food plant-based diet (WFPB).

Dr Greger explains how researchers are trying to explain the mechanism behind reversal of diabetic neuropathy and diabetic retinopathy with WFPB. Is it because the layer of trans fats that accumulates under our skin starts going away? Or is it that blood flow improves; our nerves have blood vessels that can get clogged up, thereby depriving nerves of oxygen. When we create conditions (by adopting WFPB, for example), we facilitate declogging of blood vessels throughout our body, and reduction in trans fat stores in our body. But where do trans fats come into our body from? See Trans Fats.

(2015) Can Diabetic Retinopathy Be Reversed?

(5 mins) Transcript. Dr Greger's summary: "The reversal of blindness due to hypertension and diabetes with Dr. Kempner's rice and fruit diet demonstrates the power of diet to exceed the benefits of the best modern medicine and surgery have to offer."

Dr Peter Rogers

In a FaceBook comment, Dr Peter Rogers remarked:

"Low fat, low sodium helps resolve the ischemic component. The other major component is related to the hyperglycemia. Peripheral nerves are like endothelial cells, and cannot block entry of excess glucose, when there's hyperglycemia (due to insulin resistance from a high fat diet). Avoiding dietary fat lowers insulin resistance, thus lowering blood glucose levels. Ref: Brownlee (2004 Banting winner), "Unifying theory of diabetes complications."
