An excellent TED talk in which Bob shares his personal story.
This video has many more details.
Bob is 59 years old in this talk. This talk is similar to his TED Talk but with more insights.
Bob starts his day with some yoga and meditation daily. He started cycling 11 miles from home to work every day. For yoga, he studied the book by Swami Vishnudevananda below. He was largely self taught.
Yoga book: The Complete Illustrated Book Of Yoga (1960) by Swami Vishnudevananda.
A sequence that combines yoga, free weights, hand stands, chin ups and so on.
The book is The Complete Illustrated Book Of Yoga (1960) by Swami Vishnudevananda.
Bob was influenced by Your Body's Many Cries for Water by Dr Batmanghelidj. This book emphasizes that inadequate hydration leads to a slew of chronic sicknesses, and that often, the resolution is simply to drink enough water!
Bob mentions two books in his presentations:
Bob also noticed that rates of MS are much lower in less developed countries. In his TED Talk, he remembers seeing a sign at a nature preserve informing the public that feeding human food like chips and candy to deer would shorten their lives by 30%. This made him think, "hmm, maybe there is something amiss in modern food in Western countries."
Bob's research into nutrition led him to adopt a raw vegan lifestyle for healing himself.
Recipes: See Bob Cafaro: Recipes. Bob made several videos outlining what he eats at home and when traveling. Like the Okinawans, Bob is a fan of sweet potatoes! He also prepares salads, roasted veggies, and so on. For traveling, he dehydrates sweet potatoes, veggies and fruits. And Bob is a fan of ginger tea.
Stimulants: No alcohol, no smoking.
Bob adopted Intermittent Fasting for 12 to 15 hours daily. He also fasts once a week for 36 hours. He also adopted the Okinawan practice to stop eating when they feel 80% full in the stomach. This avoids overeating.
Bob breaks his weekly 36-hr fast with raw sunflower seeds.
Bob adopted visualization and verbalization techniques. For example, he would mentally repeat positive affirmations like "My MS is going into remission, it is leaving my body, I can feel the lesions healing" and "I feel the use of my hands returning, my eyesight is getting better every day. I know the disease will leave my body." And he would visualize that the lesions in his brain are going away.
Bob decided to study the mindset and lifestyle habits of people who had done the impossible! In his presentations, Bob talks about his role models:
(1) Nando Parrado: Nando is one of the 16 survivors of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes mountains on 13 October 1972. He wrote this book: Miracle in the Andes (304 pages, 2007) by Nando Parrado. Another book that inspired Bob was Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors (318 pages, 2002) by Piers Paul Read.
Who is Nando Parrado? Check out this talk by him to see why he's special! TEDx2014 Nando Parrado (21 mins, 2014).
(2) Jose Silva: Bob noticed that medicine inserts often mention that the medicine outperformed the control group who probably got healed due to the 'placebo effect'. This made Bob wonder, 'what exactly is the placebo effect? can we do anything to strengthn it?' His search led him to books like You The Healer (276 pages, 1992) by Robert Stone and Jose Silva, and The Silva Mind Control Method (176 pages, 1991) by Jose Silva.
(3) Roger Bannister: The first person to run a mile in under 4 minutes.
(4) Bobby Fischer: Bob studied the book My 60 Memorable Games (384 pages, 2009) by Bobby Fischer.
(5) Lance Armstrong: A cancer survivor and world class cyclist.
(6) Nolan Ryan: Nolan Ryan's Pitcher's Bible (176 pages, 1991). Nolan Ryan was an extraordinary athlete who kept himself fit into his 40s as a baseball pitcher.
Bob highlights this book: Nolan Ryan's Pitcher's Bible (176 pages, 1991) by Nolan Ryan. In the end, he reminds us,
In 2013, extensive tests revealed that Bob had no lesions in his brain. In 1999, he had counted as many as 53 lesions! His spine showed no signs of disease either!
