Approximately 57% of Americans over 2 years of age don't get sufficient magnesium from diet. See Magnesium - CDC. What can low magnesium cause? Dr Greger's videos helped me understand that it's linked to heart disease, especially sudden cardiac death!

Dr Greger points out that even vegetarians in America don't get enough magnesium through their diet. Why? Because very few individuals like to consume dark leafy greens!

An overview article by Dr Greger:

(2012) Mineral of the Year — Magnesium

(3 mins) Transcript. Dr Greger's summary: "Despite promising autopsy and population data suggesting that inadequate magnesium intake is a risk factor for sudden cardiac death, it wasn't until recently that this was demonstrated in prospective studies."

(2012) How Do Nuts Prevent Sudden Cardiac Death?

(3 mins) Transcript. Dr Greger's summary: "Most men and women who die of heart disease, our #1 killer, die suddenly without any known history of heart problems. Nut consumption, however, has been associated specifically with decreased risk of sudden cardiac death, which may be due to magnesium, a mineral found predominantly in whole grains, greens, beans, nuts, and seeds."
