Flavor Enhancers For Breakfast
26 Dec 2021
Disclaimer
Flavor enhancers are an essential component of My Daily Breakfast: Sweet Porridge.

Herbs & spices: Cinnamon powder, nutmeg, ginger powder, cardamom powder, ground fennel, mint leaves. These herbs and spices are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatories: see Antioxidants in a Pinch (4 mins, 2019) by Dr Greger) and Which Spices Fight Inflammation? (5 mins, 2014).

Misc: Cacao powder, carob powder and vanilla extract. Cacao powder is health promoting.

Maximize antioxidants in every meal! Why? See Antioxidant Dynamics In Our Body; in particular, see the video How to Reach the Antioxidant "RDA" (3 mins, 2013). Keeping these videos by Dr Greger in mind, I try to maximize antioxidant value of all my meals through incorporation of herbs, spices and berries.

Cacao Powder

Cacao Powder
Cacao powder gives hot cereal a chocolaty flavor. It pairs really well with bananas. I buy undutched cocoa powder: it is less processed but more bitter than dutched cacao powder. Which one to buy? Either is okay, argues Dr Greger (see Cacao powder is health promoting). Basically, we tend to consume more of dutched cacao powder in any meal; that increase in intake offsets the decrease in nutrition due to processing.
Cinnamon Powder

Cinnamon Powder
I add cinnamon powder to sweet breakfast almost daily.
Cardamom Powder

Cardamom Powder
Cardamom powder enhances the flavor of all sweet preparations! I am a fan.
Ginger Powder

Ginger Powder
Ginger powder gives the morning breakfast a strong gingery flavor which may not appeal to everybody. However, I like to add a bit remembering that ginger is health promoting.
Fennel Powder

Fennel Powder
Fennel seeds are health promoting! So I add fennel seeds to sweet porridge sometimes.
Vanilla Extract

Vanilla Extract
Vanilla extract enhances the flavor of sweet preparations in general! I add a few drops sometimes.

Vanilla extract vs vanilla essence: This article explains: "Vanilla extract is usually made by soaking vanilla pods in alcohol and water — with flavour taken up by the liquid ingredients. Vanilla essence is a synthetic — so it's made using artificial flavours and colours. Since it's manufactured, you will often find vanilla essence contains very little or no real vanillin. As a result, it's sometimes high in additional additives (e.g. colouring, flavouring, sweeteners, preservatives.)"

Carob Powder

Carob Powder
Carob powder is a nice substitute for cacao powder. And Dr Greger says that carob powder is good for us :)
Fresh Mint

Fresh Mint
Adds a nice flavor to sweet porridge :)
