Over the years, a large number of meat-free, dairy-free restaurants have opened up in the bay area!
Address: 516 Barber Ln, Milpitas, CA 95035
Tips: Serving sizes are large, so I prefer to go with 2-3 friends and order 'family-style', which means that we all share the dishes that we individually order. I really like the Flying Buddha soup, Healthy Brown Rice (with the sauce by the side; it has oil) and tofu dishes.
Address: 1177 W El Camino Real, Sunnyvale, CA 94087
Tips: My favorite dish is 'Spring Dosa' — it has lots of veggies; you can ask them to make it oil-free (just like Dosa Paratha).

Tips: A Buddhist Vietnamese restaurant. Cheap! Lots of choices! Fresh tofu. I like their non-spicy soups; they are large sized. I wish that their dishes were oil-free.

Chinese, Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Burmese, Mediterranean and Indian restaurants have plenty of healthy, vegan options. Even pizza places have started offering vegan pizzas!

Address: 142 Castro St, Mountain View, CA 94041
Tips: I've tried their 'Asian Salad' with Tofu (Coconut Curry), steamed vegetables (instead of shallow fried), all the toppings except oil and jalapenos, and Tamarind Vignarette by the side. Yummy! Would like to try their 'The Garden Box' next time without oil.
Address: 2580 West El Camino Real, Mountain View, CA 94040
Tips: Really tasty and healthy: salad bowl (instead of pita bread / sajj wrap / rice bowl) with hummus, garlic sauce, garbanzo beans, eggplant, cauliflower, tomatoes, cucumber, onions, pickled cucumber, cabbage slaw, beets, pickled turnips, avocado, spicy tahini sauce. They serve it with hot lentil soup by the side.

Tips: This is a meat-heavy restaurant with very few but good vegan dishes. 'Tandoori Roti' is made of whole wheat; all the 'naans' and 'parathas' are made of refined flour. Among veggie dishes, I usually order 'Palak Aloo', 'Daal Chana', 'Chana Masala' and 'Baingan Bhartha'. Among these, 'Palak Aloo' and 'Daal Chana' are consistently good. The other two preparations are sometimes oily.
Address: 2400 Charleston Rd, Mountain View, CA 94043
Tips: I usually order a bowl with brown rice, black beans & pinto beans, fajita veggies (these always look oily though), extra salsa, corn, extra lettuce and sometimes, guacamole.
Address: 126 Castro Street, Mountain View, CA 94041 — Tel: (650) 938 6736
Tips: Jaffa-style thick hummus, no added olive oil please; whole wheat pita. For veggies, take multiple servings of their cabbage slaw which is a free side dish.
